Access Hazard Assessment Training through the
Community Environmental Health Resource Center (CEHRC)

The Community Environmental Health Resource Center (CEHRC) is now offering training to teach staff and volunteers of community-based organizations and government agency employees how to check high-risk homes for health hazards.  Either one-day or two-day training sessions teach how to test for lead in dust, paint chips, and soil; how to perform CEHRC’s visual assessment; and how to check for cockroach infestation, moisture and mold problems, carbon monoxide, and radon.

Training is available in either English or Spanish.  This training stresses hands-on learning for individuals of any educational background.  Trainees who successfully complete the training can be accredited as Lead Sampling Technicians.  The training packages include an accredited and fully qualified trainer, training to check high-risk homes for multiple health hazards, and follow-up technical assistance.  This training also qualifies community-based organizations for a discount for laboratory supplies and analytical services from BTS Labs as well as free database services.

What CEHRC Provides
The training package includes:

  • An accredited trainer,
  • A training delivery customized to the needs of your group,
  • Student manuals,
  • Certificates for students who successfully complete the LST course by passing a short test,
  • All hazard assessment supplies relevant to your training,
  • Intensive hands-on practice with the trainer,
  • 6 hours of technical assistance following your training, and
  • The use of CEHRC’s customized chain-of-custody form for use with BTS Labs, which qualifies community groups (only) for a discount on supplies and analysis from the lab. Your assessment data will be included in CEHRC’s national data set and CEHRC will email your database to you on a monthly or quarterly basis.

What You Provide

  • Up to 25 trainees (minimum 10 recommended);
  • Refreshments at break and food for lunch. (Or ensure that there is somewhere for them to get lunch and communicate this with the trainer so they build in enough time for breaks);
  • A training site for the required amount of time;
  • LCD projector (for power point) and an overhead projector (for transparencies) – if you do not have these materials available, let CEHRC know when scheduling;
  • Sign in sheet;
  • Paper/wipe board for trainer’s use at the front of the room;
  • Wall/screen to project on;
  • Table in the front of the room for the trainer’s materials, laptop, LCD projector, etc. (Trainer will bring their own laptop);
  • You may want to have some additional sampling supplies on hand such as: masking tape, permanent markers, rulers, zip-lock bags, a moisture meter (if you have one), etc;
  • You may also want to arrange for a home or other building to be available for use as a hands-on practice site. The trainer can help you walk through and practice your assessments, while providing guidance and assistance at the end of your training. (Arrange in advance with trainer)
